Last checked August 2026. Wix changes its interface often — if something looks different, the underlying steps usually still apply.
This is the whole process from a standing start. Take it in order and you will have a live website by the end.
Step 1: Create your Wix account
Sign up with an email address you will still have access to in five years. Avoid using a staff member's personal account.
Step 2: Tell Wix what kind of site you need
Answer the setup questions honestly — they decide which features and templates Wix suggests.
Step 3: Choose a template
Pick one whose layout matches the amount of content you actually have. You cannot swap templates later without rebuilding.
Step 4: Replace the placeholder content
Work page by page. Real text and real photos beat clever design every time.
Step 5: Set your colours and fonts
Use the site theme so a change applies everywhere instead of element by element.
Step 6: Check the mobile version
Switch to the phone view and tidy the layout before you publish.
Step 7: Publish
Click Publish. Your site goes live on a free Wix address until you connect a domain.
Step 8: Upgrade and connect your domain
A premium plan removes the Wix ads and lets you use your own web address.
Common questions
- Is Wix free?
- You can build and publish for free on a Wix subdomain with Wix branding. A custom domain and ad removal require a premium plan.
