How to Connect a Domain to Wix

Point a domain you already own at your Wix website, without breaking your email.

Last checked August 2026. Wix changes its interface often — if something looks different, the underlying steps usually still apply.

If you bought your web address somewhere other than Wix — GoDaddy, Namecheap, Crazy Domains, Google Domains and so on — you need to tell that provider to send visitors to your Wix website. That is all "connecting a domain" means.

Note: You do not need to move your domain to Wix to use it on a Wix website. Connecting is usually the simpler option.

Before you start

  • Your Wix site must be published.
  • You need a paid Wix premium plan — free sites cannot use a custom domain.
  • You need the login for wherever you bought the domain.

Step 1: Publish your website

Open your site in the editor and click Publish in the top right. A domain cannot be connected to an unpublished site.

Step 2: Open your site dashboard

Go to your Wix account, select the site, and open the dashboard for that site rather than the editor.

Step 3: Find the domain settings

In the left menu choose Settings, then Domains. This is where every domain attached to this site is listed.

Step 4: Choose Connect a domain you already own

Wix will ask whether you want to buy a new domain or connect an existing one. Choose the connect option and type your domain exactly as you own it, for example yourbusiness.com.au.

Step 5: Pick the pointing method

Wix offers two ways to connect. Pointing changes two records at your current provider and leaves everything else alone. Name server connection hands all DNS control to Wix. If you already have business email running on this domain, choose pointing — it is the safer option.

Careful: Switching name servers moves DNS control to Wix. If your business email uses that domain and the records are not recreated in Wix, email will stop arriving. When in doubt, use pointing.

Step 6: Copy the records Wix gives you

Wix shows you an A record (an IP address) and a CNAME record for www. Keep this screen open — you are about to paste these somewhere else.

Step 7: Paste the records at your domain provider

Log into the company you bought the domain from, find the DNS settings for that domain, and update the A record for @ and the CNAME record for www with the values Wix gave you. Save.

Step 8: Wait, then check

Come back to the Wix domain screen and use its verification button. Most connections work within an hour, but DNS changes are allowed up to 48 hours to spread worldwide.

How to tell it worked

  • Your domain loads your Wix site instead of a parking page.
  • The address bar shows a padlock — the free SSL certificate has been issued.
  • Typing the address with and without www both work.
Tip: Still seeing the old site an hour later? Try a private browsing window. Browsers cache websites aggressively and will happily show you yesterday's version.

How long does a Wix domain connection take?
Usually under an hour, though DNS changes are formally allowed up to 48 hours to propagate worldwide.
Will connecting my domain break my email?
Not if you use the pointing method, which only changes the two records that control your website. Changing name servers can break email unless the mail records are recreated.
Do I need a paid Wix plan to use my own domain?
Yes. Custom domains require a Wix premium plan.
